Leave the Camera at Home – Your Phone is All You Need

Published 03 Dec 2013 by Paul Turner

Time For an Alternative?
With a slew of new camera apps, and a number of top photojournalists praising phone cameras, maybe it’s time to think about leaving the SLR at home.

Here’s Why:
The best camera is the one you have on you, and most of us are fanatical about not leaving the house without our mobile phones.

It’s Discreet
The slim dimensions and the ubiquitous nature of mobile phones means that nobody bats an eyelid if they see one in your hand. Pull your SLR from your bag however, and you’re suddenly attracting glances. Worse still, you look like the typical tourist. For NY Times photographer Ben Lowy used his iPhone to document the Arab Spring, fearing that his high-end equipment would draw unwanted attention and make his subjects self-conscious. For extra stealthiness, be sure to turn off the ‘shutter’ sound effect.

Selfies
A weird phenomenon of our times is the selfie: the totally unselfconscious self-portrait. Usually in public surroundings and involving a duckface pout, selfies are far easier to create on phones due to their front and back cameras.

Uploading
If you need to get an image over to someone, somewhere, sharpish, then your smartphone is your friend. In just a couple of taps, you can upload an image to a cloud service for safekeeping, share it on social media, or even attach it to an email. No memory card readers and uploading to your laptop necessary.

Post-shoot editing
Sure, your compact will let you choose a ‘mode’ or an effect before you click away, but you have no way of knowing how it’s going to turn out beforehand. With the growing number of photo editing and effects software apps, improving your images (or making them hideously tacky) is easy. In Instagram for example, you can put your image through several filters before committing.
